Categories for fibers

Fibers can be broken into:
- Animal or Protein Fibers
from a variety of Sheep (Merino, Romni etc.), Goats, (Kashmir, Mohair, Angora), Camel, Bison, Yak, Alpaca, Angora Rabbits, Silk. Also here a recent article on Spider Silk; here more information form the American Museum for Natural History with a video on the spider silk
- Plant fibers include Flax/Linen, Cotton including increasingly organic Cotton, Hemp, Ramie .
- Synthesized fibers can be divided in those made from natural sources:
Rayon, Tencel, Bamboo, (with some of the pro's and con's) also check this site for various synthetic processes Soy Fibers and those made from chemicals: Nylon, Orlon, Acrylic etc.

also check for natural fibers from animal and plant sources on International Year of Natural Fibres 2009.

A good source, specifically related to bamboo labeling clarifies 'natural' not only as a material, but on how it is processed, either mechanically or by use of chemicals check Canadian Guidance on Labeling Textiles

Cones of fine wool for $11 a kilo. red, burgundy, 2 yellows, several
blues, several greens, black, white, greys, etc.
'Rounds' of untwisted wool good for knitting thick (like a Cowichan)
sweaters for $11 kilo. purple, mauve, white, red,etc
Merino/Angora roving for $20 kilo.
